I saw a meme the other day involving a man sitting reading a newspaper with the quote ‘If I tell you I’ll do something, that means I’ll do it. You don’t have to keep reminding me every six months’. 

I sympathise with that little cartoon man.

You see as ‘creatives’ we constantly have to think of new ideas for our clients, new looks, new approaches, trying to keep one step ahead – but as I wrote in our ‘A Website Less Ordinary’ blog, working for yourselves then takes a back seat.

Take blogs. When we first launched this website we took time out to write down some thoughts in fancy blog form and very pleased we were with ourselves too. Then we started doing our paid work and forgot about them. They were put on our lengthy to-do list and pushed a little lower week-on-week, month-on-month.

11 months on and the bottom of the nagging to-do list can no longer be ignored. When trying to attract new customers we like to use the personal approach. Blogs are a great way to convey that – I’m not cutting a pasting this, these are my true post-biscuit thoughts. Fact is we are still slack with our own stuff because we spend all our time on other people’s.

Noble? Perhaps, but not great business practise. Much like you wouldn’t trust a fat personal trainer to get you fit and lean, a tired website and out-of-date social media does not throw an attractive light on a marketing company.

Our business has changed dramatically for the better in recent time, we’ve grown in size and knowledge, become more professional and are able to offer much more to larger and demanding clients. Whoop! Well done us. But who knew? We’re not showing off at all – and you need to show off a bit. Not quite full Elton John on stage showing off, more Tom Hardy reading bedtime stories. Give the people what they want…

The ‘do as I say, not as I do’ approach is one we can no longer maintain, so expect more from us. At least some of it will make a bit of sense, I promise.
